Thompson Lead-Free Opaque Enamel Color 1040 Quill White is a lead-free white undercoat enamel designed for metal enameling and decorative finishes. Although marketed as an undercoat and described as less opaque than 1030, it remains translucent enough for glazing, shading, and layered tonal work. The 2 oz bottle is convenient for both studio and field use, and the enamel can be finely ground to create a smooth grisaille base. Artists often employ 1040 Quill White for preliminary sketches, delicate highlights, and controlled washes before applying color layers.
Firing range is 1400°F–1500°F, making it a medium-temperature enamel with medium expansion that works well on suitable metal surfaces. Use as a base for designs on silver, copper, and other compatible metals; layered applications yield smooth transitions and luminous whites.
